The United States Department of Labor defines Workplace Violence as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behaviour that occurs at your workplace. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. It can affect and involve employees, clients, customers and visitors. Acts of violence and other injuries is currently the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), of the 5,147 fatal workplace injuries that occurred in the United States in 2017, 458 were cases of intentional injury by another person. However it manifests itself, workplace violence is a major concern for employers and employees across all jurisdiction.
In addition to threats of physical violence at work, the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development include Goal 8 which focuses on providing decent work and economic growth for everyone. One of their outcome targets refers to decent work, which requires that we respect the fundamental rights of workers when it comes to work safety, remuneration, and respect for the physical and mental integrity of the worker in the exercise of their employment. The current pandemic is pushing the world into the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression, making these goals more important than ever.
