Workshop A: Assessing Risk for Psychopathic Personality Disorder

Psychopathy is one of the most robust risk factors for violence identified in the scientific literature and a critical part of any comprehensive assessment of violence risk. In this Workshop, attendees will discuss the key features of psychopathy; learn how to administer, score, and interpret two of the most commonly used tests for assessing psychopathy, the Hare Psychopathy Checklist‐Revised (PCL‐R) and the Screening Version of the PCL‐R (PCL:SV); and discuss clinical‐forensic applications of the PCL‐R and PCL:SV, including legal and professional issues. Attendees may bring their own test manual or borrow a copy provided by the instructor.

Workshop B: Assessing and Managing Violence Risk

Violence risk assessment and management is a critical aspect of practice for many professions. In this Workshop, attendees will review the nature and causes of violence, with special emphasis on mental illness; discuss major approaches to violence risk assessment, focusing on actuarial and structured professional judgment procedures; learn to administer one of the most commonly used assessment procedures, Version 2 of the Historical‐Clinical‐Risk management‐20 (HCR‐20); and discuss the use of the HCR‐20 in risk management. A copy of the HCR‐20 manual is included in the course fee

Workshop C: Assessing Risk for Intimate Partner Violence

Intimate partner violence is a common form of violence, but one with special dynamics and risk factors. In this Workshop, attendees will review the literature on intimate partner violence, with a focus on the critical role of personality disorder; discuss major actuarial and structured professional judgment procedures; learn to administer two commonly used assessment procedures, the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide (SARA) and Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B‐SAFER); and discuss the use of the SARA and B‐SAFER in risk management. Copies of the SARA and B‐SAFER manuals are included in the course fee.

Workshop D: Assessing Risk for Sexual Assault

Sexual violence is another area that requires specialized knowledge and training. In this Workshop, attendees will review the scientific and professional literature on the causes of sexual violence, with the focus on the critical role of paraphilia (sexual deviation); discuss major actuarial and structured professional judgment procedures; learn to administer two commonly used assessment procedures, the Sexual Violence Risk‐20 (SVR‐20) and Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (RSVP); and discuss the use of the SVR‐20 and RSVP in risk management. Copies of the SVR‐20 and RSVP manuals are included in the course fee.
